Welcome back to spring! I’m celebrating my favorite season by planning candlelit outdoor soirees, planning weekend getaways to seaside towns on the Washington coast, and revisiting my perfume collection. While I don’t believe all perfumes are crafted with specific seasons in mind, there are absolutely fragrances out there that belong under the springtime sun and smell exceptional when worn in the company of dew-dusted tulips, freshly cut grass, and gingham picnic blankets. To kick off the season, I’ve spent the last couple of weeks scrolling through noteworthy new launches and classics, ID’ing the best perfumes to wear over the next couple of months with the guidance of two Dsm-firmenich fragrance experts.

If you’re wondering what can be considered a spring perfume, try to recall any moment where smelling a fragrance transported you to a sun-soaked spring day where the smell of crisp grass, blooming florals are laced in a gust of warm breeze. Dsm-firmenich’s Associate Fragrance Development Manager, Rachael Larsen, tells us a spring fragrance uses bright top notes like citruses and fruits to evoke the feeling of spring freshness—a major departure from winter’s warm, rich, resinous and woody fragrances. “When spring comes around, there is this exciting moment where juicy and dewy, floral fragrances become ‘acceptable’ again,” Larsen says. “Spring fragrances should have sparkling top notes and lush florals as the star of the show.”
Which notes are frequently featured?
The most beloved spring are can be defined by an enchanting blend of fresh florals, bright citrus, pulpy fruits, and crisp green notes, and Larsen ID’d just how the compositions when us over every time. “Citrus notes like bergamot, lemon, and mandarin (as well as fruity notes like pear and peach), signal the freshness of spring. Floral notes like rose, jasmine, violet, and lily-of-the-valley start emerging in the same way the grass returns to its green hue,” says Larsen. She also adds that you may also detect warm white florals such as orange blossom, tuberose, and gardenia, as they’re celebrated for their ability to bring solar impressions that feel nostalgic of summer, “which some people might gravitate toward as the weather warms up.”

Then, just when you think you’ve already fall in love, you’re introduced to a rich blend of subtle skin musk accented by warm woods and vanilla.

The eau de parfum leans into all things sun-drenched and fruity by combining fresh coconut water and lime with Blue Java banana, papaya and vanilla for a creamy finish.

It has layers of solar-saturated florals balanced by a blend of lush fruits, creating a lovely, lychee-forward scent that reminds me of mouthwatering sorbets and orange sunsets. Its fruity, floral notes dry into a skin-like, warm musk that wears beautifully for hours after initial application.

While I primarily wear this during the early fall months (it’s my go-to scent for sunny September days spent at the farmers market), I’ve found myself reaching for English Pear & Freesia Cologne to effectively mark the arrival of spring. Where the perfume’s crisp, Williams pear note stands out to me more in the latter months of the year, I’m discovering just how more I can pick up on the freesia this season. It feels fresh, lightly musky, and… is that something bubbly and bright somewhere in the mix? Count me in.
Customer Review: “Light, boozy, carbonated pears swinging around with a bouquet of fresh flowers. The first burst is almost like a nice cold fruity beer, sparkling wine or some sort of sweet champagne that will take your brain to a festive mood (for a second at least). The dry down is quite musky on my skin, patchouli also makes its way across the initial happy cocktail party mentioned, becoming a nice clean-showery scent with delicate projection.”

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the coming of spring than to use a limited edition perfume that smells like the season in a chic bottle. Ffern has been making frequent appearances on my timeline for months, but I just had the opportunity to try one of their scents for the first time. I’m happy to report that not only did their newest release, a bouquet with creamy tuberose and green petitgrain, inspire a rewatch of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, but has me scrambling to try the rest of their launches.

It quickly settles into a zingy citrus with a fresh green edge that feels uplifting and clean. Fragrances that remind me of rose water, like Diptyque’s classic Eau Rose Eau de Toilette, will always make my list of scent that smell just like spring, and dsm-firmenich Perfumer, Erwan Raguenes cosigns my pick. “This is a very airy, petal-like rose with subtle fruity facets that makes it fresh and delicate like early spring,” he says. The scent opens with a double dose of rose (Damascena and centifolia) before unfolding to reveal a tasty lychee accord enhanced by chamomile, and a streak of artichoke to keep things grounded.

[It] opens with a rush of bittersweet bergamot and juicy tart vine-ripe black currants followed immediately with a saturating flood of soft, tropical, delicately sweet lychee fruit. A pristinely fresh and glorious rose makes her entrance amongst the sparkling lemony threads of dewy-green geranium, which provides a zesty citric strength and additional support to the principal rose scent itself. A subdued non-indolic jasmine woven throughout provides an extra touch of sweetly refined floral complexity without intruding on the precedence of the roses.”

In my opinion, you can never have too many Diptyque options in your springtime lineup, and the French brand’s Fleur de Peau Eau de Toilette has once again made mine for this season. The perfume reinterprets the heartbreakingly beautiful myth of Eros and Psyche with a luminous, fruity blend of alluring iris entwined with velvety magnolia and a skin-like musk that embraces the skin like a dream. Fresh, powdery, and romantic, this is one spring-coded perfume that makes me feel like a garden nymph.
Customer Review: “The opening is a breath of freshness, the addition of Mandarin alongside the classic pink pepper is a brilliant move. While the pink pepper maintains that ‘spicy’ and dry character typical of the line, the citrus gives an initial burst of energy that is missing in the EDP version. It’s a brighter and more immediate invitation. The heart is a floral elegance: Here the iris reigns supreme, but the novelty is the magnolia.”

In case you’re not as endlessly tapped into #PerfumeTok as I am (being a Gen Z beauty editor can be a skill and a curse), ozonic scents are officially on the rise in unexpected ways. Clean and crisp, these scents evoke fresh spring days without overtaking florals, citrus, or gourmand notes. One of my go-to’s for spring is Gucci Flora Gorgeous Orchid: an enchanting blend of sweet vanilla duo and luminous vanilla orchid with the crisp, added edge of an ozonic accord.

While its gorgeous pink hue initially caught my eye, the uplifting blend of juicy pear and blackcurrant paired with delicate notes of lily-of-the-valley and jasmine is what led to the buy. Its light, sweet notes evoke memories of sunny days, while the musk, vanilla and ambrox add warmth.

It feels very airy and joyful, just like walking through flowering trees on a sunny spring afternoon,” says Raguenes. Created in 2005, the scent draws its inspiration from the garden islands in Aswan, Egypt with notes of tangy green mango and delicate lotus.
Customer Review: “A work of art. I own a small sample bottle gifted to me along with three other Hermès scents. The notes intrigued me so I was eager to try it first. So interesting, fresh, and natural. Expensive, but the best art is. This is a crafted perfume meant to take you on a journey. On my skin there’s a fresh combination of carrot, tomato, mango and grapefruit. Don’t be put off by the unique combo—the notes reveal themselves in such an elegant composition.”

Not all early spring days are sunny… in fact, the majority of the ones I’ve seen in Seattle were misty, cloudy, and cool. Bluebell Eau de Toilette reminds me of those signature, Pacific Northwest spring mornings I spent on my porch with a steaming cup of tea as the rain fell with dewy notes of hyacinth swirled with zesty citrus, green clove, and a sprinkling a cinnamon. While I’ve seen this scent described as broody, I would be more likely to describe it as delightfully melancholy.

If you’ve been tempted to try a rose fragrance for spring, but haven’t found one that’s versatile or multi-faceted, try this Byredo favorite. Offering a fresh take on a traditional floral note, the scent opens with fiery notes of Sichuan pepper and ambrette seeds balanced with a heart of delicate orris and enchanting damascena rose. Its base notes, bold and luxurious, are defined by skin-like musks set alight by ambroxan. It’s inviting and familiar (without being done already).
Customer Review: “As someone who usually shies away from rose notes, this fragrance completely enchanted me. On my skin, it opens with a hint of candied lemon and rose in a Turkish delight [and] rosewater kind of way. There’s a dewy, almost airy quality to it, with a subtle powderiness that makes it soft. Every now and then, I find earthy, green notes appeal to me more as the calendar creeps towards spring, and The Alchemist’s Garden: A Floral Verse Eau de Parfum, is one of my favorite wats to tap into that mood. I’m not sure if it’s the vintage-inspired bottle or its contents that reminds me of the grounding, herbal scents of an ancient apothecary, but this scent transports me there. It opens with Indian jasmine before gracefully unfurling into a poetic blend of hand-picked Sri Lankan black tea leaves enveloped by paper-like white musk.
Customer Review: “For me, this is one of the most naturalistic interpretations of black tea I’ve ever experienced. There is a gentle astringency here, just like in a freshly brewed cup of real black tea. Jasmine blends beautifully into the tea note, adding a soft sweetness and a delicate floral nuance, which makes the composition unfold with remarkable refinement.”
Best Aromatic Citrus: Creed Wild Vetiver Eau de Parfum

I love wearing a citrus fragrance for spring, and this time around, I’ll be wearing Creed’s Wild Vetiver for all my favorite events that come with the arrival of spring (including framer’s market strolls and nights at the opera). Vibrant and energetic, this aromatic citrus perfume kicks off with a juicy burst of Timur berry accented by juicy bergamot and pink pepper. Sweet rose centifolia, geranium, and blackcurrant bud take over, before shifting into a cozy blend of vetiver, cedarwood, and warm amberwood.
Customer Review: “Wild Vetiver has a misleading name, but a beautiful scent nonetheless. It opens with a fresh watery rose and quickly turns into a tart, spicy berry fragrance with green and floral undertones. a truly beautiful DNA with decent projection and longevity.”
